About Dr. Schakel

Dr. Mark Schakel is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who directs the Foot and Ankle program at SRO and the Foot and Ankle Trauma Service at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. As one of the few fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeons in the northern coastal counties, he treats patients of all ages for conditions including trauma, congenital anomalies, sports injuries and more.

Dr. Schakel graduated with distinction from Iowa State University in Ames, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City, where he was elected a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

Upon completing medical school, he served both his surgical internship and orthopedic residency training at the University of Florida College of Medicine, where he taught as a clinical instructor in his final year. He then crossed the continent to receive fellowship training from world-renowned foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Roger Mann in San Leandro, California, before joining SRO in 1990.

Dr. Schakel is a frequent presenter at national orthopedic conferences, teaches continuing education courses on care of the foot and ankle, has published widely in professional journals, and served as an online editor for a book on foot surgery.

He and his wife Christy live in Santa Rosa, where they enjoy swimming, hiking, and other outdoor activities while keeping abreast of their four grown children.
