About Dr. Stein
Dr. Gary Stein is a board-certified specialist in orthopedic surgery, adult reconstructive surgery, sports medicine, hand and back care. A pioneer in developing minimally invasive techniques for hip and knee replacement surgery, he is co-director of the Sports Medicine Center at SRO and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr. Stein graduated with honors from the University of Indiana with a double major in chemistry and biology before entering the university’s medical school for his M.D. degree, also with honors. After internships at Denver Presbyterian Medical Center in surgery and Brookhaven Hospital in Dallas as an emergency room physician, he went on to serve his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, Irvine.
During his tenure at SRO, he has served as chair of the Orthopedic Department as well as chief of staff at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. His community involvement has included six years on the board of directors for the Foundation for Medical Care of Sonoma County, fundraising activities on behalf of the Sonoma County YMCA, involvement with the Boys & Girls Club and CYO sports programs, and 12 years as team physician for Cardinal Newman High School sports programs.
Dr. Stein has contributed to professional journals such as Orthopaedics and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, while also maintaining a longtime practice of continuing professional education. In his leisure time, he enjoys cycling, water skiing, snow skiing, and time with his wife Janna, with whom he has three children.
