About Dr. Degenhardt
Dr. Thomas Degenhardt’s career as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon has been highlighted by his prominent role in the development and practice of sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and joint reconstruction of the knee. He serves as co-director of The Sports Medicine Center at SRO and has extensive experience in complex reconstructive procedures of the knee, including articular cartilage regeneration and transfer techniques, multiple ligament reconstructions, and primary and revision knee replacement.
Having earned his undergraduate degree in history at the University of California, Berkeley, he went across the bay to pursue his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, which included internship training at San Francisco General Hospital and an orthopedic surgery fellowship at UC San Francisco. He then served for two years as a major in the United States Army as an orthopedic surgeon stationed in Landstuhl, West Germany, before returning for another fellowship training year in sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia.
Dr. Degenhardt has long enjoyed serving as team physician and orthopedic surgeon for school and national sports teams, with various tenures of service for Sonoma State University, Montgomery High School, and the United States Ski Team. He has treated athletes of all ages, from the very young through college and professional athletes. A longtime presenter at professional symposiums, he has taught continuing medical education courses for the Arthroscopic Association of North America and has published articles in numerous orthopedic journals. Away from the clinic, Dr. Degenhardt is an active participant in sports and outdoor activities such as golf, skiing and mountaineering with his two sons, Nick and Dan.
