SRO’s Top Doctor Awards 2018: Focus on Sport’s Medicine Center

Santa Rosa Orthopaedics was recently recognized under the category of Sports Medicine by Sonoma Magazine’s Top Doctors survey highlighting Dr. Thomas Degenhardt, Dr. Gary A. Stein and Dr. Michael McDermott for their expertise as orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine doctors. Today we would like to expand on the work these fine physicians do at the Sports Medicine Center.

Sonoma Magazine’s Top Doctor survey is distributed annually to local doctors who are asked which medical specialist they would most often recommend to someone they care about. More than 300 professionals emerged as top docs in 50 specialties of medicine.  Survey results revealed that SRO’s orthopaedic surgeons Dr. Thomas Degenhardt, Gary Stein, M.D. and Dr. Michael McDermott are viewed as exemplary in the field of Sports Medicine.

The Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center

The heart of SRO’s extraordinary continuum of care is the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center—a medically advanced, 10,000 square foot facility equipped with specialized technology designed to enhance patient recovery and rehabilitation.

Our experienced, highly skilled physical and occupational therapists have completed extensive post-graduate education in orthopaedics and sports rehabilitation, and stay current on the most effective methods of injury prevention and rehabilitation.

About Dr. Degenardt

Dr. Thomas C. Degenhardt is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and joint reconstruction of the knee and shoulder. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Degenhardt completed his undergraduate education in history at the University of California, Berkeley before receiving his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco. He then served an internship at San Francisco General Hospital and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at UC San Francisco. He served a fellowship year in sports medicine at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic. He also served for two years as a major in the United States Army as an orthopaedic surgeon stationed in Landstuhl, West Germany.

Dr. Degenhardt was the team orthopaedic surgeon for Sonoma State University and Montgomery High School and he has served as team physician for the United States Ski Team.

Dr. Degenhardt has presented at numerous professional symposiums, taught at continuing medical education courses for the Arthroscopic Association of North America and has published articles in numerous orthopaedic journals.

Dr. Degenhardt is co-director of The Sports Medicine Center at SRO and has extensive experience in complex reconstructive procedures of the knee and shoulder, including articular cartilage regeneration and transfer techniques, multiple ligament reconstructions and primary and revision knee replacement.

Dr. Degenhardt has treated athletes of all ages including college and professional athletes.

In addition to his community involvement and contributions to advancing the orthopaedic profession, Dr. Degenhardt has been recognized for his excellence in patient care by Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of the St. Joseph Health System Network. Dr. Degenhardt has won several medical awards including being named best orthopaedic doctor for two consecutive years by Memorial Hospital.

About Dr. Stein

Dr. Gary Stein specializes in orthopaedic surgery, adult reconstructive surgery, sports medicine, and back care. Dr. Stein has pioneered techniques in hip and knee replacement surgery and has been performing (MIS) minimally invasive hip replacement surgical techniques since 2001.

Dr. Stein is co-director of The Sports Medicine Center at SRO and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has undergone recertification as well. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Stein has been in private practice in Santa Rosa for twenty years. He has served as chairman of the Orthopaedic Department as well as the chief of staff at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. He has also served six years on the board of directors for the Foundation for Medical Care of Sonoma County. Dr. Stein’s professional publication credits include articles in Orthopaedics and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

He has been active in community organizations, including the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and C.Y.O. Sports Programs. For over 10 years Dr. Stein was also the team physician for Cardinal Newman High School sports program. His recreational hobbies include cycling, water-skiing, and snow skiing.

About Dr. McDermott

Dr. Michael McDermott is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and other orthopaedic problems, with emphasis on arthroscopic, complex reconstruction and minimally invasive procedures of the knee, hip and shoulder. Dr. McDermott has specialized training in reverse total shoulder as well as Mako Robotic assisted patient specific hip and knee replacement.

Dr. McDermott is co-director of The Sports Medicine Center at SRO. He is experienced in advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder, in addition to sports medicine, adult reconstructive, joint replacement, minimally invasive procedures, as well as general orthopaedic surgery. Dr. McDermott’s particular areas of interest include knee ligament reconstruction, shoulder stabilization and rotator cuff surgery, and he has developed a special interest in repair of the posterior cruciate ligament and multiple ligamentous injuries about the knee. He also applies his expertise in the treatment of young patients with damaged meniscus and articular cartilage, to include meniscal repair and transplantation, knee re-alignment surgery, and advanced repair and resurfacing techniques for articular cartilage injuries.
